Stephen Fleming to replace Brendon McCullum as England’s Test coach

Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming is the favourite to be appointed England’s Test head coach, replacing compatriot Brendon McCullum. First appointed in 2022, the latter stepped down from his role after suffering a 2-1 defeat to the Blackcaps last month. 

After weeks of hunting for a new coach, Fleming has emerged as the leading candidate to take over the reins of the Test side and work in tandem with McCullum, who continues to handle the white-ball squad, which recently defeated India in both T20I and ODI series. 

Following his retirement as a player in 2008, Fleming had a long and fruitful association with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League and other franchises under the Super Kings conglomerate. The former left-handed batter guided CSK to five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 titles before stepping down from his role at the end of the 2026 season. 

Following a lengthy interview process under England’s Managing Director Rob Key, Fleming has emerged as a leading candidate. However, there are still question marks over when he will officially take charge of the Test side. According to The Telegraph, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is relaxed about the prospect of having assistant coach Marcus Trescothick take charge of the side for their upcoming three-match series against Pakistan, commencing on August 19. The Kiwi could officially begin his role as Test head coach ahead of England’s away series to South Africa in December. This will give Fleming seven Tests to prepare his side ahead of the 2027 Ashes series on home soil.

Fleming has beaten the competition from the likes of Andy Flower, Justin Langer, Richard Dawson and Jonathan Trott to become England’s primary candidate for the vacant role. Flower had ruled himself out of contention to focus on his franchise gigs with Royal Challengers Bengaluru and London Spirit, while Langer confirmed he had received no communication from the ECB.

It is worth mentioning that Fleming has no experience coaching a red-ball side in his relatively young coaching career. The New Zealander, however, has had a stint with the Southern Brave in The Hundred for two years and also represented Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire and Middlesex in the domestic circuit during his playing days. 

Apart from a new coach, the ECB are also in search of a new Test captain following Ben Stokes’ international retirement. According to reports, Joe Root is set to be reappointed as skipper, four years after he stepped down.
