Warwickshire captain Sam Hain ruled out of One-Day Cup with knee injury

Warwickshire have suffered a major setback after Sam Hain was ruled out of the remainder of the One-Day Cup with a knee injury. The experienced batter, who earned two ODI caps for England in 2023, sustained the injury during Warwickshire’s opening game of the tournament against Northamptonshire and is expected to remain sidelined until at least mid-August.

Hain had recently been appointed captain of Warwickshire’s One-Day Cup side and made an impressive 80 in the team’s opening fixture before injuring his knee while fielding. Scans conducted last week confirmed the extent of the injury, forcing him out of the competition. Rob Yates has since taken over the captaincy, with Ed Barnard away on Hundred duty for Sunrisers Leeds. Warwickshire have struggled in Hain’s absence, losing all three of their opening matches to sit at the bottom of Group A.

The 30-year-old has enjoyed another productive domestic season despite limited opportunities in List A cricket. He boasts an outstanding List A average of 58.18 and was unfortunate to go unsold in The Hundred draft despite scoring consistently in the T20 Blast, where he averaged 43.71 at a strike rate of 140.36.

Hain’s absence could also hurt Warwickshire’s County Championship title ambitions. The club currently sits third in Division One, five points behind defending champions Nottinghamshire, with six matches remaining. Hain has been Warwickshire’s leading run-scorer this season, amassing 622 runs at an average of 62.20 from 14 innings.

Meanwhile, Nottinghamshire have signed Scotland international George Munsey for their next two One-Day Cup fixtures following injuries to Jack Haynes and Ben Slater. Munsey, who finished as Nottinghamshire’s leading run-scorer during their run to the T20 Blast semi-finals, will feature against Leicestershire and Lancashire before joining Scotland for Cricket World Cup League 2 matches against the UAE and Canada. He could return for Nottinghamshire if they qualify for the One-Day Cup knockout stages later this month.

It’s rare to find a batter who can score as consistently as he did in the Blast this year, and he was a great fit as a character too. He’ll add extra experience and quality to our top order, and provide another sounding board for our younger homegrown players. With Jack and Ben both missing out through injury, adding George to our squad is essential as we try and build on our current position in the qualification places,” said Notts Outlaws’ head coach Paul Franks as quoted by Cricinfo.
