World Test Championship 2027 Final to be played at The Oval

London-based The Oval has been selected as the venue for the 2027 ICC World Test Championship Final, scheduled to run from Wednesday, June 9, to Sunday, June 13. The ICC granted England hosting rights for three consecutive WTC Finals spanning 2027, 2029, and 2031, with the ECB tasked with choosing each host ground. This marks the second occasion the iconic venue will stage the championship decider, the first being in 2023 when Australia claimed victory over India.

Nine teams remain mathematically alive in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle, which is fast approaching its conclusion. The Australians lead the table with an 87.50 per cent win rate after winning seven of eight matches, while defending champions South Africa occupy second spot at 75 per cent. Upcoming contests across Asia will influence the race for the final as Sri Lanka faces India in a two-Test series from August 15, with Pakistan’s three-match tour of England following in August and September.

“The ICC World Test Championship Final has established itself as one of the most prestigious occasions in the global cricket calendar, bringing together the two best Test teams in the world after two years of sustained excellence and consistency. The 2027 World Test Championship Final will hold special significance as cricket celebrates 150 years of Test cricket. The Oval has played a proud role in the history of our sport and has hosted some of its most memorable moments,” Gaurav Saxena, ICC General Manager for Events and Operations, said in a statement.

ECB expresses pride at hosting decision

The ECB holds responsibility for deciding which English or Welsh venue will stage each of the three finals.

“The 2023 final at The Oval was a huge hit with broadcasters and fans, and I’ve no doubt that next year’s event will be extra special again. This promises to be another fantastic opportunity for cricket fans in this country and from around the world to see the best two Test teams in the world from the past two years taking each other on in a showpiece event,” Neil Snowball, ECB Managing Director for Competitions and Major Events, said.

The qualifying race gains momentum over coming months, with Asian fixtures set to play a crucial role in determining which two teams will claim their spot in the June 2027 showdown.
