Reports: Rohit Sharma no longer in India’s ODI plans after England series

India opener Rohit Sharma has reportedly been informed that he is no longer part of the selectors’ long-term plans in ODI cricket beyond the ongoing series against England. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to move on from the veteran batter as it begins preparing for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

The report stated that the BCCI’s senior selection committee, along with head coach Gautam Gambhir, held discussions with Rohit last week and conveyed the team’s roadmap going forward. With the third and final ODI set to be played at Lord’s on July 19, it could potentially be Rohit’s final appearance in the 50-over format.

As reported by The Indian Express, the selectors are keen to invest in younger players, with Yashasvi Jaiswal among those expected to get more opportunities in ODI cricket. The report added that Rohit had expressed his desire to continue in the format, particularly after working on his fitness, but the selectors have made their intentions clear.

“Selectors have informed Rohit he is not in their scheme of things post the England tour and they are moving on from him after this series. Though he wanted to continue, especially after working on his fitness. The selectors have left the ball in Sharma’s court to decide his future,” a source was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

The report further claimed that Rohit was unhappy with the decision and also held discussions with a few BCCI officials during the England tour. The veteran opener has struggled for runs in the ongoing ODI series against England, managing scores of 11 and 26, with the latter coming off 47 deliveries.

Rohit’s illustrious white-ball career

Rohit has already retired from T20I and Test cricket over the last two years. He announced his retirement from T20Is shortly after leading India to the 2024 T20 World Cup title, before calling time on his Test career ahead of India’s tour of England in 2025.

Rohit’s tenure as ODI captain included guiding India to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. His aggressive approach at the top of the order also laid the foundation for India’s successful T20 World Cup campaign in 2024. And with him playing just ODIs for India, the Lord’s ODI could very well be his final appearance for India.
