Top 3 knocks of Sanjay Manjrekar for India

Top 3 knocks of Sanjay Manjrekar for India

While more famously known for his commentary and prowess as a broadcaster, Sanjay Manjrekar has had a storied playing career. An elegant batter from Mumbai, the son of the late Vijay Manjrekar, has always had big shoes to fill due to the legendary status of his lineage. He has been a stalwart of batting for Mumbai, scoring over 100 runs and having played well over 100 matches.

His career for India, though seeing over 100 matches, has not been at the lofty heights of his domestic run. Despite his lean runs and form concerns, Manjrekar has stepped up in key moments for the Indian team with his bat, scoring important runs against difficult opposition in away conditions. His most iconic knocks have come in tough conditions away from home, scoring vital runs in key results.

Here are Sanjay Manjrekar’s top 3 knocks for India

3) 108 vs West Indies, Bridgetown, April 07 – 12, 1989

Manjrekar’s first Test century came two years into the start of his international career. Playing in Bridgetown, Barbados against a hostile West Indies attack comprising Malcolm Marshall, Curtly Ambrose, Courtney Walsh and Ian Bishop, Majrekar made his mark in the first innings, riding each blow and biding his time to score runs. The West Indies has always been a tough place for batters of that era, but Manjrekar played with class and poise to score a brilliant 108 in the first innings as India put on a respectable total of 321. He took 221 balls in his innings and scored 15 boundaries, and was finally dismissed by Bishop, who picked up six wickets in the innings. While India lost that match, it was Manjrekar announcing himself with a maverick knock in tough conditions.

2) 113 vs Pakistan, Karachi November 15 – 20, 1989

The 1989 series in Pakistan may be fondly remembered for the debut of a young and prodigious right-handed batter named Sachin Tendulkar; it was his Mumbai teammate Manjrekar who was the star of the series. He scored 569 runs at an average of over 94 in the seven innings, which included two centuries. His first of the series came in an incredible rearguard effort in the first Test in Karachi. Chasing a mammoth 453 after being bowled out for 262 in the first innings in response to Pakistan’s 409, India were under the pump early. Manjrekar steadied the ship, fending off the likes of Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Imran Khan and Abdul Qadir on his way to a brilliant 113. He scored 13 boundaries in his 243-ball knock to earn India a famous draw.

1) 218 vs Pakistan, Lahore, December 01 – 06, 1989

Manjrekar saved his best for the series for the third Test in Lahore. Batting first, India were dented early with openers Kris Srikkanth and Navjot Singh Sidhu being dismissed for single figures. Manjrekar took it upon himself to steady the ship, stitching partnerships with Mohammad Azharuddin, Ravi Shastri and Manoj Prabhakar. He finished his innings with a mammoth 217 off 401 balls, scoring 23 fours and batting for almost nine hours. His marathon knock saw India post a mammoth 509, which Pakistan responded to by scoring 699 for 5, ending the game in a draw.
