MS Dhoni vs Sourav Ganguly: Who was the better captain?

Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni are widely regarded as two of the best captains India have had in the 21st century. Despite differences in leadership qualities, the duo helped the Men in Blue reach new heights whilst also giving younger players a chance in the team, giving them a platform to become all-time greats.

Ganguly took over the captaincy from Sachin Tendulkar on a permanent basis in 2000. The left-handed batter’s tenure as captain lasted until 2005, before being replaced by Rahul Dravid. Dhoni, on the other hand, led India for the first time during the 2007 ICC World Twenty20, which they won. Following his success in the shortest format, he was named the team’s all-format leader in 2008.

Both Ganguly and Dhoni inspired an entire generation of cricketers and fans in the country, with both providing memorable moments on and off the field. However, once compared, who was actually a better captain for India?

Dhoni and Ganguly are two sides of the same coin when it comes to captaincy. They had different methods of leading the side, but India under both stalwarts had some of the most successful times. Dhoni is widely regarded as a calming presence in the middle, not getting the pressure to get the better of him, allowing him to make tough decisions at the right moment. 

Ganguly, on the other hand, had an aggressive approach and aimed to remove the fear of losing from the side. This helped India get results away from home, something which was uncommon during the early 21st century. 

Despite the differences, both captains were well-renowned for giving opportunities to young players. Under Ganguly, the likes of Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh, Ashish Nehra, Ajit Agarkar, Yuvraj Singh, amongst others all flourished. Dhoni, meanwhile, saw the emergence of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin.

• Dhoni captained a relatively young Indian side to the 2013 Champions Trophy, beating hosts England in the final.
• India became the number one side in Test cricket for the first time in 2009, winning the ICC Mace under Dhoni’s leadership.
• India won a Test series in New Zealand for the first time since 1967-68 when Dhoni guided them to a series win in 2009.

Sourav Ganguly:

• India shared the 2002 Champions Trophy with Sri Lanka under Ganguly’s captaincy after the final was abandoned due to rain.
• Ganguly took India to the 2003 World Cup final, where they lost to Australia. 
• India won the historic Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 2001, ending Australia’s 16-match winning streak. The series included that famous win in Kolkata, where they won despite following on after the first innings.
• Ganguly guided India to their maiden Test series win in Pakistan in 2004. 
• He was also the first captain to win an ODI series in Pakistan in the same year. 
• Ganguly’s Indian side won the 2002 NatWest Series in England, chasing 326 in the final at Lord’s. 

Conclusion:

Dhoni and Ganguly were both crucial characters in shaping India’s cricketing history. Despite taking separate routes to attain success, both captains were responsible for providing some of the best moments in Indian cricket. While Ganguly takes a slight edge over Dhoni in being a more successful Test captain, the Ranchi-born star has points in his favour to be called a better leader in white-ball cricket.
