OTD 1972: Sourav Ganguly was born

On this day, July 8, 1972, one of India’s greatest leaders and finest batters, Sourav Ganguly, was born in Kolkata. Fondly known as ‘Dada’, Ganguly was much more than a stylish left-handed batter. He was the captain who transformed the mindset of Indian cricket and laid the foundation for one of the country’s most successful eras.

Ganguly announced himself on the international stage in memorable fashion during India’s tour of England in 1996. Making his Test debut at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground, the left-hander scored a magnificent 131, becoming only the third cricketer to score a century on Test debut at the venue. He followed it up with another hundred in the next Test at Trent Bridge, proving that he belonged at the highest level.

Despite his success as captain, Ganguly endured one of the toughest phases of his career during the Greg Chappell era. Differences with the then-India coach, coupled with a prolonged lean patch with the bat, resulted in him losing both the captaincy and his place in the national team.

However, Ganguly responded in the best possible way. Recalled for the 2006 tour of South Africa, he made an impressive comeback and finished as India’s highest run-scorer in the Test series. He continued his strong form in 2007, scoring heavily across formats, including a career-best 239 against Pakistan in Bengaluru.

After serving Indian cricket for over a decade, Ganguly retired following the home Test series against Australia in 2008. In an emotional farewell at Nagpur, then captain MS Dhoni even handed him the captaincy for the closing stages of his final Test.

Ganguly finished his international career with 18,575 runs, including 38 international centuries. In Tests, he scored 7,212 runs in 113 matches at an average of 42.17, while in ODIs, he amassed 11,363 runs in 311 games at an average of 41.02, including 22 centuries.

While his numbers are outstanding, Ganguly’s true legacy lies in the culture he created. He built a fearless Indian team, backed youngsters when they needed support, and instilled the belief that India could win anywhere in the world.
