India take on England in the first of five T20I matches at Chester-le-Street on Wednesday, July 01. The Men in Blue come off a 2-0 series loss against Ireland, who recorded their first-ever series victory against India.
The world champions have undergone a major shake-up, with new skipper Shreyas Iyer looking to alter his fortunes after the Ireland series loss. England, on the other hand, comes in after a 2-1 series loss in the Test series to New Zealand. They take on their opponents from the semi-finals of the 2026 T20 World Cup, where they lost by a mere seven runs in a high-scoring thriller.
Both teams are filled with difference makers and players who can take games away on their own. Contests in the past between these two teams have seen multiple players step up, and in this new episode of the storied rivalry, we take a look at the players who could step up and make a difference.
Here are 3 players to watch out for in the 1st ENG vs IND T20I:
3. Abhishek Sharma

Abhishek Sharma had an underwhelming World Cup campaign but followed it up with a brilliant season in the 2026 IPL and looked in blistering form against Ireland. He scored 563 runs in 15 matches, striking at 204.72, as the Sunrisers Hyderabad made the playoffs. He has been a constant presence at the top of the order for the Indian team, providing fast starts and taking bowlers on with ease.
Despite being dismissed for a duck in the second T20I, the southpaw scored a brilliant 49 off just 20 balls in the first T20I, taking the game to the Irish bowlers on a difficult wicket. Abhishek averages 48 and strikes at 214.92 against the Three Lions and will be expected to maintain his stellar record.
2. Jofra Archer

England’s pace spearhead Jofra Archer has had a fantastic few months across formats. He comes into this series as one of the top bowlers in the IPL. He was the Rajasthan Royals’ main strike bowler, picking up 25 wickets in 16 matches, bowling at an economy of 9.31. Playing just two Tests against New Zealand, he finished as England’s Player of the Series, picking up 11 wickets.
Archer has been at his fiery best in recent times, rightfully taking his place as England’s strike bowler after a long injury layoff. He has picked up 15 wickets in 12 matches against India, bowling at an economy rate of 9.47. He will be looking to better that record and play his role in leading Harry Brook’s side to victory.
1. Harshit Rana

Indian speedster Harshit Rana has slowly established himself as a stable presence in the pace attack under Gautam Gambhir’s regime. The fast-bowler, known for his hit-the-deck abilities with the ball, has become a reliable all-phase threat, capable of bowling in the powerplay, middle and death overs. Coming off the back of a significant knee injury, which saw him miss the T20 World Cup, he will be looking to stake a claim as the team looks to expand their pace battery.
Rana was India’s joint-highest wicket-taker against Ireland, picking up 4 wickets at an economy rate of 5.85. He finished with figures of 3 for 24 from four overs in the first game, while managing figures of 1 for 17 in the second.
