Legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar has labelled India’s defeat to Ireland in the two-match T20I series as one of the lowest points in the history of Indian cricket. This comes after the Men in Blue suffered a one-run defeat in Belfast to lose the series 2-0.
Gavaskar criticised India’s lacklustre performance over the past few days, which has resulted in the defeat. The reason why the former batter is disappointed is due to the lack of intent and fight shown by the team, which showcased sheer overconfidence. The defeat wouldn’t have been hurtful had Ireland played exceptionally, something they did not.
“Sunday, June 28, will go down as one of the worst days in Indian cricket. Losing a game of cricket is one thing, but to lose a series, albeit a two-match series, also depends on whom you lose to. There are many low points in Indian cricket, and I have been a part of some, but to lose to Ireland has to be one of the lowest in the history of Indian cricket. If Ireland had played exceptional cricket, then it would have lessened the blow. It was simply overconfidence and a sense of casualness that let India down, and that’s why the sadness,” Sunil Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar.
Gavaskar also blasted the Indian batter for trying to play aggressively without understanding the conditions on offer.
“Playing according to the situation is such an important aspect of any sport, especially cricket, but almost all the Indian batters tried to live up to their image and, on pitches that had a little extra carry and bounce, found that they were dismissed very easily by some good catching allied to smart bowling,” he added.
India have a bigger challenge waiting in front of them following their loss to Ireland. The defending T20 World Cup champions will travel across the Irish Sea to play a five-match T20I series against England, commencing on July 1.
