Kane Williamson has shocked the cricketing fraternity with a retirement from international cricket. The retirement is slated to take immediate effect, and he will not be taking part in the rest of the ongoing series against England.
The highly revered cricketer has said that he has always taken pride in representing his country at the international level, but the hunger has started diminishing, he feels. As a result, he felt that it was the right time to step away from cricket as he bids goodbye to the beautiful game on his own terms. Representing the BlackCaps is something that is very dear to his heart, he added.
“I’ve always felt a strong drive and hunger for international cricket, and I take pride in knowing I’ve given it my all in every match I’ve played for New Zealand. Continuing with anything less wouldn’t be right, and I feel fortunate to step away on my own terms,” he said in an official statement as quoted by NZC.
“I leave feeling optimistic about where this group is heading. There’s a huge amount of talent and a real desire to do something special with this New Zealand team. It’s a team I love, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have been part of it for so long. It will continue to be dear to my heart,” the prolific batter added.

The 35-year-old will go down as one of the most celebrated batters of New Zealand. He played 110 Test matches, 175 ODIs, and 93 T20Is for the BlackCaps before hanging up his boots from the game. At the end of a stellar international career, Williamson has 19346 to his tally in a remarkable stint for New Zealand that took off in August 2010 during his ODI debut that came against India.
Widely regarded as one of the best Test batters of the modern-day generation, Williamson has decided to leave cricket just 485 runs short of the 10000-run landmark in the longest format of the game. He was also a forming part of the Fab Four of Test cricket alongside Steven Smith, Joe Root, and Virat Kohli. As a result, he has become the second to say goodbye to the game from the elite quartet.
Root made his Test debut against India in November 2010 at the Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad and made an instant mark with a hundred in his maiden outing, which came against the MS Dhoni-led side, also the no.1-ranked team at that point in time. Since then, Williamson has achieved countless batting records, through which he has received immense admiration and respect from the cricketing world.
