The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the squads for India‘s upcoming tours of Ireland and England, along with the India A squad for the two multi-day matches against Sri Lanka A. The selection committee has also named the squad for the Asian Games 2026, which is scheduled to take place in Japan in September 2026.
One of the biggest talking points from the squad announcements is the appointment of Shreyas Iyer as India’s new T20I captain, replacing Suryakumar Yadav. Suryakumar guided India to their third T20 World Cup title, but a prolonged run of low scores has resulted in a change in leadership.
Iyer, meanwhile, has built an impressive captaincy résumé over the years. He led Delhi Capitals to the IPL final in 2020, guided Kolkata Knight Riders to the title in 2024, and captained Punjab Kings to the final in 2025. Alongside his leadership credentials, Iyer has been one of India’s most consistent batters across formats.
Another major highlight is the inclusion of 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who has been selected for all three white-ball assignments, the Ireland tour, the England tour, and the Asian Games squad. The youngster’s rapid rise continues to generate significant excitement among fans and experts alike.
Veteran fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the white-ball series against Ireland and England as part of workload management, with the team management prioritizing his involvement in Tests and ODIs. However, Bumrah has been included in India’s squad for the Asian Games 2026, where the team will be aiming to secure the gold medal.
