India and Afghanistan are set to face each other in a one-off Test match in Mullanpur starting on June 6. The contest promises to be an intriguing one as players switch their focus from the fast-paced T20 format to the challenges of red-ball cricket.

With a mix of experienced campaigners and potential debutants expected to feature, both teams will be eager to make a strong statement. As the two sides prepare for the unique challenge of Test cricket, several players could play a decisive role in determining the outcome of the match.

Here are three players to watch out for in the India vs Afghanistan one-off Test:

Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai will be one of the key players to keep an eye on during the Test. Omarzai has played only one Test match so far, claiming a wicket but not getting an opportunity to showcase his batting skills. However, his performances in white-ball cricket have established him as one of Afghanistan’s most dependable all-rounders.

Having played in Mullanpur during the IPL and possessing experience in Indian conditions, Omarzai could prove to be a valuable asset for his side. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball gives Afghanistan greater balance, and he will be eager to make a lasting impact in the longest format of the game.

Devdutt Padikkal

India’s stylish left-handed batter Devdutt Padikkal is another player who could attract plenty of attention. Padikkal has played only two Test matches for India, scoring 90 runs, but his First-Class record highlights his immense potential. In 54 First-Class matches, he has accumulated 3627 runs at an impressive average of 42.67, including nine centuries and 19 half-centuries.

He is known for his elegant stroke play and solid technique and will be keen to convert his domestic success into international performances. A strong showing in this Test could significantly strengthen his case for a regular place in India’s red-ball setup.

Harsh Dubey

Young left-arm spinner Harsh Dubey is expected to make his Test debut and could emerge as a surprise package. Often viewed as a player capable of filling a role similar to Ravindra Jadeja, Dubey has enjoyed remarkable success in domestic cricket. In 27 First-Class matches, he has taken 133 wickets and scored 1026 runs, underlining his credentials as a genuine all-rounder.

He also holds the record for the most wickets in a single Ranji Trophy season, having claimed an outstanding 69 scalps. With his ability to extract turns, vary his pace, and contribute with the bat, Dubey has the potential to become a game-changer and make an immediate impact on his Test debut.
