Mohammad Rizwan’s Three Finest Performances in International Cricket

Mohammad Rizwan's Three Finest Performances in International Cricket

Few cricketers have reshaped their reputation as dramatically as Mohammad Rizwan. Once viewed as a gritty wicketkeeper-batter fighting for a permanent place, he evolved into one of Pakistan’s most dependable performers across formats. His career is built not merely on runs, but on runs scored when the stakes were highest. Among many notable innings, three stand above the rest for their quality, context and lasting impact.

1. 131* vs Sri Lanka, World Cup 2023, Hyderabad

This remains Rizwan’s greatest ODI innings.

Pakistan were chasing 345 against Sri Lanka in a World Cup match, a target that appeared daunting even on a good batting surface. What followed was an exhibition of endurance, judgment and skill. Rizwan finished unbeaten on 131 from 121 balls and shared a match-winning partnership with Abdullah Shafique as Pakistan completed the highest successful chase in men’s World Cup history.

The innings became even more remarkable because Rizwan battled severe cramps during the latter stages. Despite obvious physical discomfort, he maintained control of the chase, refusing to allow Sri Lanka any route back into the contest. Pakistan reached 345 for 4 with ten balls to spare, and Rizwan was deservedly named Player of the Match.

World Cups are remembered through defining performances. This was one.

2. 104* vs India, T20 World Cup 2021, Dubai

Pakistan had never defeated India in a men’s World Cup match before the 2021 T20 World Cup. The psychological burden was immense.

Rizwan and Babar Azam responded with one of the most significant opening partnerships in Pakistan’s white-ball history. Chasing 152, Rizwan remained unbeaten on 104 from 55 balls and dominated India’s attack with authority and composure. Pakistan won by ten wickets, their first World Cup victory over India after decades of frustration.

The century was not merely statistically impressive. It came against Pakistan’s biggest rival, on the sport’s grandest stage, with global attention fixed on the contest. Rizwan’s innings removed any possibility of a late collapse and turned a tense chase into a historic statement.

For many Pakistan supporters, this remains the innings most closely associated with his rise as a world-class T20 batter.

3. 67 vs Australia, T20 World Cup Semi-final 2021, Dubai

Scorecards do not always tell the full story.

Pakistan’s semi-final against Australia was one of the most consequential T20 matches in the country’s recent history. Just two days after spending time in intensive care with a chest infection, Rizwan walked out to open the batting and produced a courageous 67 from 52 balls.

Conditions were far from straightforward, yet he anchored the innings and helped Pakistan reach 176 for 4, a total that looked highly competitive in a World Cup knockout match. Australia eventually prevailed through a late assault from Matthew Wade, but Rizwan’s effort remains one of the most courageous performances of his career.
