OTD | Viv Richards Played The Greatest ODI Innings Of All Time

OTD Viv Richards Played The Greatest ODI Innings Of All Time

On May 31, 1984, at Old Trafford, Manchester, Viv Richards produced what remains the greatest One-Day International innings the game has ever seen. Four decades later, in an era of double hundreds, flat pitches and oversized bats, that statement still stands firm.

Scorecards tell part of the story. Richards finished unbeaten on 189 from 170 balls with 21 fours and five sixes. West Indies made 272 for 9 and won by 104 runs. Magnificent numbers, certainly. But this innings has never been about numbers alone. It has always been about circumstance, difficulty and absolute domination.

West Indies were in ruins almost from the outset. Desmond Haynes and Gordon Greenidge were gone early. The middle order followed them back to the pavilion in a procession. At 102 for 7, England sensed an upset. By the time the ninth wicket fell, the score was 166 for 9. Richards was stranded with only Michael Holding for company and more than a dozen overs still to survive.

What followed was batting elevated to something close to mythology.

Holding’s contribution in their unbroken last-wicket stand of 106 was 12. Richards farmed the strike, dismantled England’s attack and transformed a certain defeat into a total that looked impossible only an hour earlier. Every boundary seemed to carry a message. Every pull, drive and hook reinforced his authority over the contest.

To understand the scale of the achievement, one must remember the era. This was not modern ODI cricket. There were no fielding restrictions designed to favour batters for long stretches. There were no two new balls. Boundaries were larger, bats were thinner and scoring rates across the game were dramatically lower. In 1984, an ODI century was still a rare event. A score approaching 200 belonged in the realm of fantasy.

Yet Richards made 189 without appearing reckless. His innings combined violence with complete control. England’s bowlers were not facing a man taking desperate risks. They were facing a genius dictating terms.

The statistical records only strengthen the case. At the time, 189 not out was the highest individual score in ODI history. Richards contributed nearly 70 per cent of West Indies’ total, still one of the most extraordinary individual shares in a completed ODI innings. His unbeaten partnership of 106 for the final wicket with Holding also set a record.

What makes the innings immortal, however, is that it transcends statistics. Great batting performances are remembered for changing the emotional direction of a match. Richards did exactly that. England had West Indies cornered. He simply refused to acknowledge the situation. He batted as though collapse, pressure and scoreboards were irrelevant concepts.

Many ODI innings have been bigger. Some have been faster. A few have come in World Cups. None have combined adversity, quality, influence and sheer intimidation quite like Richards did that day in Manchester.

On this day in 1984, Viv Richards did not merely rescue an innings. He defined what greatness in one-day cricket looks like.
