Top 3 performances of Tauseef Ahmed in international cricket

Tauseef Ahmed may not have enjoyed the fame of some of Pakistan’s legendary bowlers, but he was one of the most dependable off-spinners produced by the country during the 1980s. Renowned for his control, discipline, and ability to build pressure, Tauseef often played the perfect supporting role alongside attacking bowlers like Abdul Qadir and Imran Khan. In 34 Test matches he captured 93 wickets, while in 70 ODIs he claimed 55 wickets with remarkable economy. Among several memorable performances, these three stand out as the finest of his international career.

Here are top 3 performances of Tauseef Ahmed in international cricket:

9/126 vs Australia, Karachi, 1980

Tauseef announced himself to the cricketing world in spectacular fashion during the first Test against Australia at Karachi in 1980. Making his debut against a strong Australian batting line-up, the young off-spinner displayed extraordinary composure and skill. Australia batted first and were dismissed for 225 runs. Kim Hughes top-scored with 85, but Tauseef troubled the visitors throughout the innings and finished with 4 for 64. Fellow spinner Iqbal Qasim supported him brilliantly with 4 for 69.

Pakistan replied with 292 runs thanks to 89 from Majid Khan and 58 from Taslim Arif. Australia’s left-arm spinner Ray Bright took 7 for 87 to keep his side in the contest. In the second innings, however, Pakistan’s spin duo completely dominated. Australia were bowled out for only 140 runs despite an unbeaten 58 by Allan Border. Iqbal Qasim ripped through the batting with 7 for 49, while Tauseef added 3 for 62. Pakistan comfortably chased the target and won by seven wickets. Tauseef finished the match with 9 wickets, an astonishing achievement on debut against one of the world’s strongest teams.

9/139 vs India, Bengaluru, 1987

One of the greatest moments in Pakistan’s cricket history came during the famous Bengaluru Test against India in 1987, and Tauseef Ahmed played a decisive role in that memorable victory. Pakistan struggled badly in the first innings and were dismissed for just 116 runs. Maninder Singh devastated the batting line-up with 7 for 27. In reply, India could only manage 145 runs despite 50 from Dilip Vengsarkar. Pakistan’s spin twins Iqbal Qasim and Tauseef shared all ten wickets, each claiming five wickets. Tauseef’s figures of 5 for 54 were especially crucial in keeping Pakistan alive in the contest.

Pakistan fought back strongly in the second innings, scoring 249 runs. Ravi Shastri took 4 for 69, but Pakistan managed to set India a target of 221. India came close to victory thanks to a magnificent 96 from Sunil Gavaskar, yet Pakistan held their nerve to bowl India out for 204 and secure a dramatic 16-run win. Tauseef again delivered under pressure, taking 4 for 85 and finishing with 9 wickets in the match.

9/77 vs Sri Lanka, Kandy, 1986

Tauseef produced perhaps the most economical and match-defining spell of his career against Sri Lanka in Kandy in 1986. Sri Lanka were dismissed for only 109 runs in the first innings, with Tauseef, Imran Khan, and Abdul Qadir taking three wickets each. Pakistan then scored 230, powered by 81 from Mudassar Nazar and 54 from Saleem Malik.

Defending a modest lead, Pakistan’s bowlers crushed Sri Lanka again. Tauseef was outstanding, spinning through the batting order with 6 for 45 as the hosts collapsed for just 101. Pakistan secured an innings victory, while Tauseef finished with remarkable match figures of 9 for 77, one of the best performances by a Pakistani off-spinner overseas.
