OTD: When was Rohit Sharma born? India’s finest modern-day batter

On April 30, 1987, one of India’s finest modern-day batters, Rohit Sharma, was born in Nagpur, Maharashtra. A stylish right-handed top-order batter, Rohit has represented Mumbai in domestic cricket and the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League. Over the years, he has established himself as one of the most elegant and destructive batters in world cricket.

Rohit was part of several landmark moments in Indian cricket history. He was a member of the squad that won the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy. Later in his career, he captained India during the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, further cementing his leadership credentials.

He began his domestic journey with a List A debut for West Zone in the Deodhar Trophy in 2005, alongside future stars like Cheteshwar Pujara and Ravindra Jadeja. Rohit made his first-class debut for India A in 2006 and later represented Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy during the 2006-07 season. His Test debut came in 2013 against the West Indies men’s cricket team, where he announced himself with a magnificent 177. He followed it up with another century in the next Test at the Wankhede Stadium.

Despite early promise, Rohit’s Test career saw ups and downs. After being out of the side for a period, he made a successful comeback during the 2018-19 tour of Australia. He later went on to lead India in the longest format but endured a challenging phase, including a home series loss to New Zealand men’s cricket team and an away defeat in Australia. He eventually retired from Test cricket on May 7, 2025.

Rohit made his international debut in ODIs in 2007 against Ireland men’s cricket team, initially batting in the middle order. His maiden ODI century came against Zimbabwe men’s cricket team in 2010, but inconsistency followed. A turning point came in 2013 when captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni promoted him to open the innings during the Champions Trophy, a move that transformed his career.

Later that year, during a series against Australia men’s cricket team, Rohit registered his first ODI double century. He went on to script history by scoring a record-breaking 264 against Sri Lanka men’s cricket team, the highest individual score in ODI cricket. He also holds the record for the most double centuries in ODIs.

As a captain, Rohit enjoyed notable success. He led India to victory in the 2018 Asia Cup and guided the team to multiple bilateral series wins. In November 2020, he was nominated for the ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Decade award. In July 2022, he became the first Indian captain to win both ODI and T20I series in England on the same tour. In February 2025, during the Champions Trophy, he became the second-fastest player to reach 11,000 ODI runs.

In T20Is, Rohit was equally impactful. He scored a century against South Africa in 2015 at Dharamshala and, in 2017, equalled the fastest T20I hundred (35 balls) against Sri Lanka. He also became only the second Indian after Virat Kohli to cross 2,000 T20I runs.

Overall, Rohit Sharma amassed 4,301 runs in Tests, 11,577 runs in ODIs, and 4,231 runs in T20Is. Having retired from Tests and T20Is, he continues to contribute to Indian cricket in the ODI format.
