Rajasthan Royals returned to winning ways by defeating the Lucknow Super Giants by 40 runs on Wednesday, April 22, at the BRSABV Ekana Cricket Stadium.

Rishabh Pant won the toss on Tuesday and invited the visiting side to bat first. After getting hit for three consecutive boundaries in the third over, Mohammed Shami dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel off back-to-back deliveries. Mohsin Khan followed it up with a wicket-maiden as Rajasthan lost their formidable top three with just 32 runs on the board.

Riyan Parag and Shimron Hetmyer tried to resurrect the ship with a 30-run partnership off as many balls. However, both were dismissed in their 20s. Ravindra Jadeja and Donovan Ferreira had to rebuild the innings yet again. The latter was dismissed for a 19-ball 20, and Rajasthan decided to send Shubham Dubey as the Impact Player to add some crucial runs. The move worked wonders as Dubey hit 19 off 11. Jadeja also contributed nicely with a 29-ball 43*.

In reply, Lucknow got off to a dreadful start with Ayush Badoni getting run-out in the first over. To make matters worse, skipper Pant lost his wicket in the second over, Lucknow slumping to 10/2. However, the problems didn’t end there for the home side as Aiden Markram was dismissed in the third over.

When three out of your top three batters register ducks, it is very difficult to win a game, especially on a sluggish track. Nicholas Pooran tried to give himself some time at the crease but his 25-ball stay only yielded 22 runs. Mitchell Marsh tried to anchor the innings with his 41-ball 55. However, Nandre Burger dismissed him in the 16th over to give his team a huge breakthrough.

The lower-order couldn’t contribute much as the Royals’ bowlers had a field day out in the middle. In the end, the hosts were skittled out for 119 in 18 overs.

Key moments from the match:

1. Ravindra Jadeja shows the value of experience

Ravindra Jadeja walked out to bat at No. 6 when Rajasthan were 62/4 in the ninth over. The experienced campaigner played the sheet anchor’s role, holding the innings together on a tough pitch. Shubham Dubey came in as the Impact Player and scored a crucial 19* off 12 balls. Jadeja cut loose in the final over as he took 20 runs off Mayank Yadav, who was playing his first game of the season.

2. Jofra Archer and Co. wreak havoc

Rajasthan might have been a few runs short of a par-score. However, their bowlers made it look like they had way too many runs to defend. Nandre Burger and Jofra Archer bowled with a lot of steam with the new ball. Spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Ravi Bishnoi also played their part well. Brijesh Sharma also used his variations nicely and bagged two wickets. Archer was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3/20 in four overs.

3. Mohammed Shami turns back the clock

Mohammed Shami showed once again that he still belongs at this level. He dismissed in-form batters Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel with two almost-unplayable deliveries. Shami bowled three overs inside the power play and one in the middle to finish with figures of 2/30. The way in which he bowled against a strong batting side was one of the rare silver linings for Lucknow in this game.
