OTD | 1989 Harmanpreet Kaur was born

On March 8, 1989, one of the most influential figures in modern women’s cricket, Harmanpreet Kaur, was born in Punjab, India. Over the years, Harmanpreet has become a cornerstone of Indian women’s cricket, standing alongside legendary names such as Jhulan Goswami and Mithali Raj. She is known for her explosive batting, fearless attitude and has played a major role in transforming India into a competitive force in international women’s cricket.

Harmanpreet made her international debut for the India women in 2009. Early in her career, she showed signs of becoming a match-winner with her aggressive batting style. Just three years later, she was entrusted with leadership responsibilities and captained India to the Women’s T20 Asia Cup title, defeating Pakistan women in the final. Under her leadership, India also secured victories in both ODI and T20I series against Bangladesh at home.

Her talent became widely recognised during the 2013 Women’s World Cup. Although India suffered a defeat, Harmanpreet’s impressive century against England women highlighted her immense potential and established her as a rising star in the game. In 2016, following India’s disappointing campaign in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, Harmanpreet was appointed the full-time captain across formats, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the team.

As a batter, Harmanpreet is known for her fearless stroke play and ability to dominate bowlers with powerful hitting. One of the most iconic moments of her career came during the 2017 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup when she smashed a sensational 171 not out against Australia women in the semi-final. Her breathtaking innings powered India into the final and became a landmark moment that significantly boosted the popularity and visibility of women’s cricket in India.

Nearly a decade later, Harmanpreet played a central role in one of the greatest achievements in Indian women’s cricket history when India defeated South Africa women to win the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025. Her leadership and match-winning performances were crucial in guiding the team to its historic triumph.

Harmanpreet has also been a trailblazer in franchise cricket. She became the first Indian cricketer, male or female, to sign a contract in the Women’s Big Bash League when she joined Sydney Thunder WBBL in Australia. Soon after, she also signed with Surrey Stars in England’s Kia Super League.

Her leadership success has continued in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), where she captained Mumbai Indians Women to titles in two of the first three seasons. In the 2025 final against Delhi Capitals Women, she played a match-winning knock of 66 off 44 balls, rescuing Mumbai after an early collapse and guiding them to victory.

Across her international career, Harmanpreet has compiled impressive numbers. In six Tests she has scored 200 runs, in 164 ODIs she has amassed 4541 runs, and in 190 T20Is she has scored 3822 runs.
