India (IND) will go up against New Zealand (NZ) in the finals of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on Sunday, March 08 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The Blackcaps are in the summit clash after Finn Allen’s blistering 33-ball hundred helped them beat an in-form South Africa side, while India overcame England after scoring a mammoth 253/7, winning by just seven runs after a heroic century from Jacob Bethell almost took the Three Lions over the line in the second semi-final.

Cricket is a sport which is governed by the weather conditions. They do not just hold the power to influence moments of the sport but also define the overall outcome of the matches. One such outcome is the washout, where the game ends without a result. This is something that fans do not appreciate and the organisers always make accommodations for.

What are the rules for a washout game, and who is awarded the match?

As per the ICC Playing Conditions for the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup, a minimum of 10 overs per side must be completed for there to be a result.

On the day of the final, play can be extended to a maximum of 120 minutes after the stipulated time to end play if the required overs have not been completed for both sides.

If the required overs are not completed on the day of the final, there is the reserve day of March 9th, 2026. The match will re-start from the point where it was stopped on the original day. If no overs were bowled on the original day, the entire match will be played on the reserve day.

Finally, if the reserve day is also washed out without a result, both teams are declared joint winners.

This is different from the semi-finals, where the team that finished higher in the previous group stage progresses to the final.
