Did Afghanistan Make a Mistake by Not Choosing Rashid Khan as Captain?

Did Afghanistan Make a Mistake by Not Choosing Rashid Khan as Captain?

Afghanistan’s rise in international cricket has been nothing short of remarkable. Once considered underdogs who often suffered one-sided defeats against established Full Member nations, they have evolved into a formidable side capable of upsetting the best, in bilateral series and global tournaments alike. However, as the team looks to build sustained success, it was time to separate their talismanic bowler from the leadership role.

There is no denying Rashid Khan’s immense contribution to Afghan cricket. Across formats, he has been the spearhead of their bowling attack and a global T20 superstar. His leg-spin has consistently baffled batters with its pace, control, and subtle variations. Statistically, his impact is staggering, 45 wickets in six Tests, 210 in 117 ODIs, and 193 in 115 T20Is. In franchise cricket, he has amassed over 700 wickets in more than 500 T20 matches, underlining his dominance in the shortest format.

As a bowler, Rashid has carried Afghanistan’s attack for years, often delivering breakthroughs at crucial junctures. But captaincy is a different challenge altogether. To lead a national side, it demands tactical sharpness and the ability to manage resources under pressure. While Rashid has captained Afghanistan in over 50 matches, taking 100-plus wickets in that period, questions emerged about whether the dual responsibility is affecting his natural game.

Afghanistan’s recent tournament performances highlight the dilemma. Under Rashid’s leadership, they reached the semi-finals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 for the first time in history, registering famous wins over Australia and Bangladesh in the Super Eight stage. That campaign showed Afghanistan’s tactical maturity and growing confidence on the global stage.

However, the momentum was not sustained. Early exits in the Asia Cup 2025 and the 2026 T20 World Cup group stage exposed inconsistencies in planning and execution. While the team’s struggles cannot be placed solely on Rashid’s shoulders, captaincy in modern cricket inevitably comes under scrutiny when results dip.

Leadership can sometimes become a burden for match-winners. Rashid’s primary value lies in his bowling, setting attacking fields for himself, controlling the middle overs, and breaking partnerships. The added responsibility may dilute his impact as a strike bowler.

Now, Afghanistan have moved toward a leadership transition by appointing Ibrahim Zadran as T20I captain for the upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka national cricket team. The change signals a forward-looking approach rather than a reactionary one.

Zadran, a young and composed batter, represents the next generation and could bring fresh tactical ideas to the setup. In essence, this is not about moving on from Rashid, far from it. It is about protecting his greatest strength while allowing the team to evolve strategically.
