MCA pays tribute as sports journalists get Honours Board at Wankhede Stadium

MUMBAI: The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), storied with legacy, has identified the contributions of the sports journalists covering cricket for it round the clock. In a landmark moment, the MCA, on Wednesday, March 04, inaugurated the Honours Board for sports journalists from the yesteryears, with 36 names mentioned.

The Honours Board has been studded on the wall of the Balasaheb Thackeray Press Box inside the iconic Wankhede Stadium ahead of the second semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2026 between India and England, which will be played here on Thursday, March 05. Ajinkya Naik, the MCA President, officially unveiled the Honours Board on Wednesday afternoon.

“Mumbai’s cricketing legacy has been built not only by players on the field but also by journalists who have chronicled its journey with integrity and passion. The MCA deeply values its longstanding relationship with the city’s sports journalists. The Honours Board is a small but meaningful tribute to their dedication and contribution to the game in our city,” MCA President Ajinkya Naik said in an official statement.

Meanwhile, Unmesh Khanvilkar, on behalf of the association, also expressed his recognition for the sports journalists, labelling them as one of the key reasons behind making Mumbai cricket the fortress of Indian cricket that it is today. Khanvilkar recognised their hard work and appreciated their association with the MCA over the years.

“Sports journalists have been an important part of Mumbai cricket for many years. Through their consistent coverage, they have preserved Mumbai’s rich cricketing history, bringing the sport closer to the people. With this Honours Board, MCA recognises their hard work and longstanding association with Mumbai cricket.” Prof. Dr. Unmesh Khanvilkar added, MCA Secretary added.

Apart from the key MCA members, Clayton Murzello and G. Viswanath of the Sports Journalists Association of Mumbai were also present at the Wankhede Stadium to mark the inauguration of the Honours Board.
