ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026: 3 South Africa players to watch for in SA vs NZ

The first semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 promises to be a thrilling contest as South Africa take on New Zealand at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on March 4. South Africa has been one of the most dominant teams in the tournament, entering the knockout stage unbeaten. They registered wins over New Zealand, Afghanistan, Canada and UAE in the group stage, before overcoming India, West Indies and Zimbabwe in the Super Eight to seal their semi-final berth.

New Zealand, on the other hand, have had a mixed but resilient campaign. They suffered a defeat against South Africa in the group stage but bounced back with wins over Canada, UAE and Afghanistan. Their Super Eight clash against Pakistan was washed out, and while they defeated Sri Lanka, they lost to England in their final fixture. However, a superior Net Run Rate helped them edge into the semi-finals. As they prepare for a high-stakes rematch, here are three New Zealand players who could play a decisive role.

Here are three South Africa players to watch out for in semi-final 1 of the T20 World Cup 2026:

Aiden Markram

South African skipper Aiden Markram has led from the front in this tournament with impactful performances. He began strongly against Canada with a solid 59 and followed it up with a modest five against Afghanistan. However, he truly stamped his authority with a brilliant unbeaten 86 against New Zealand. Markram added 28 runs in another outing but faced setbacks with low scores against India and Zimbabwe.

Markram answered emphatically with a commanding 82* against West Indies, forming a crucial partnership with Quinton de Kock that steered South Africa into the semi-final. In 76 T20Is, Markram has accumulated 1948 runs at an average of 31.93 and a strike rate of 148.47, including 14 half-centuries.

Marco Jansen

Left-arm seamer Marco Jansen has been a key weapon with the ball. He started with figures of 2/30 against Canada and followed it up with 1/42 versus Afghanistan. Jansen delivered standout performances against stronger opponents, claiming 4/40 against New Zealand and an impressive 4/22 against India, playing a decisive role in those victories.

Although he endured a tough outing against West Indies, conceding 50 runs without a wicket, and was rested against Zimbabwe, his ability to generate bounce and swing makes him a potent threat. In 29 T20Is, Jansen has taken 33 wickets at an average of 28.15 and an economy rate of 8.68, including two four-wicket hauls. His four overs could prove decisive in the semi-final.

Lungi Ngidi

Another crucial figure is Lungi Ngidi, who has consistently delivered breakthroughs at key moments. He began the tournament with 4/31 against Canada and 3/26 against Afghanistan. Against New Zealand, he picked up 1/34, while he was highly economical against India with figures of 0/15.

Ngidi continued his strong run with 3/30 versus West Indies and 1/29 against Zimbabwe, maintaining pressure through disciplined spells. Overall, he has claimed 90 wickets in 63 T20Is at an average of 20.48 and an economy of 8.59, including three four-wicket hauls and a five-wicket haul. His knack for striking at crucial stages makes him a major asset heading into the semi-final.
