Zimbabwe vs Afghanistan 2021 T20I: How did Zimbabwe thrash Afghanistan and what made it a dominant victory?

Zimbabwe sealed a memorable victory inside two days, crushing Afghanistan by 10 wickets in the first Test in Abu Dhabi. It was only Zimbabwe’s 13th win in Test history and their first since 2018, achieved through a complete team performance led by captain Sean Williams and a relentless pace attack.

After being put in to bat, Afghanistan were bowled out for 131 in their first innings. Blessing Muzarabani (4/48) and Victor Nyauchi (3/34) exploited the conditions superbly, consistently hitting hard lengths and troubling the batters. Only Afsar Zazai (37) and Ibrahim Zadran (31) offered resistance, but regular wickets derailed Afghanistan’s progress.

Zimbabwe’s reply began shakily as Amir Hamza ripped through the top order, claiming a career-best 6/75. However, the defining moment of the Test came through Sean Williams’ composed century.

Williams first built a stabilizing partnership with Sikandar Raza before adding 75 crucial runs with Regis Chakabva. Chakabva’s brisk 44 off 71 balls helped counter Afghanistan’s bowling, while Williams anchored the innings with authority.

Resuming Day 2 on 133/5 with a slender lead, Zimbabwe suffered an early setback when Ryan Burl was trapped lbw by Ibrahim Zadran. Undeterred, Williams brought up his third Test hundred — and second as captain — shortly after lunch, reaching the milestone with a single to square leg. His 105 off 174 balls powered Zimbabwe to 250, giving them a commanding 119-run lead.

Afghanistan needed a strong response in their second innings but collapsed once again. Abdul Malik registered a second duck in the match, while Munir Ahmad, Rahmat Shah, and Hashmatullah Shahidi fell cheaply.

Nyauchi and Muzarabani struck early to leave Afghanistan reeling. Captain Asghar Afghan managed 14 before being bowled by Muzarabani, while Williams chipped in by trapping Zazai lbw.

Ibrahim Zadran offered late resistance with a fighting half-century and shared a 48-run eighth-wicket partnership with Amir Hamza. At one stage, Afghanistan edged past Zimbabwe’s first-innings lead, but the momentum was short-lived.

Donald Tiripano returned to dismiss Zadran for a well-compiled 76, inducing an edge behind, and then struck twice more to wrap up the innings for 135. Zimbabwe’s pace trio of Muzarabani, Nyauchi, and Tiripano combined to claim 16 of the 20 wickets in a dominant display.

Chasing just 17 for victory, Zimbabwe completed the formalities with ease. Prince Masvaure and Kevin Kasuza knocked off the target in just 3.2 overs without losing a wicket, sealing a comprehensive 10-wicket triumph.
