Top 3 performances of Everton Weekes in international cricket

Everton Weekes is regarded as one of the finest batters in the history of the sport. His consistency while playing for the West Indies during the late 1940s and 1950s was surreal. He is the only player to score five consecutive centuries in Test cricket. He played some phenomenal knocks during his illustrious career, where he finished with 4455 runs from 48 matches at a staggering average of 58.62.

Let’s take a look at three of his best performances in international cricket.

3. 141 vs England, Kingston (1948)

This innings played a key role in saving Everton’s career. He has been left out of the squad but was recalled at the last minute due to an injury to George Headley. He was even booed by the fans as they wanted a different player to get an opportunity in his place. However, he kept his composure and shut down the outside noise to notch up his maiden Test century. This was the commencement of his record-shattering streak of five tons. Everton hit 15 boundaries in his 141-run knock.

England scored 227 in their first innings, and the West Indies replied with 490. In the second innings, England were bowled out for 336. The Caribbean side chased down a paltry 76-run target with 10 wickets intact.

2. 162 vs India, Kolkata (1948-49)

According to Weekes, the 162 he scored against India in the first innings on a seamer-friendly track at the Eden Gardens is the greatest knock of his career. However, he wasn’t content with the first-innings ton, as he followed it up with 101 in the second innings. Not only did he become just the second West Indian to score centuries in both innings of a Test match, but he also set the record for five back-to-back Test centuries.

In the first innings, the West Indies amassed 366 on the back of Weekes’ remarkable ton. In reply, India were bowled out for 272. The tourists declared at 336/9 in their second innings, setting India a target of 431. The home side managed to salvage a draw, getting to 325/3 in the fourth innings.

1. 207 vs India, Port of Spain (1953)

This was the highest score in Weekes’ Test career and his only double century in the longest format of the game. India had scored 417 in the first innings of the first Test. However, the West Indies replied strongly, as they posted 438 on the back of Weekes’ double century. The right-handed batter hit 20 boundaries during his knock.

In India’s second innings, the visitors were bowled out for 294. The West Indies won the match by 10 wickets, with Allan Rae and Jeffrey Stollmeyer scoring unbeaten half-centuries. However, the star of the show was Weekes, who set up the win with his brilliance in the hosts’ first innings.
