Herschelle Gibbs was one of South Africa’s most gifted and celebrated cricketers. Across 90 Tests and 248 ODIs, he scored more than 14,000 international runs. Whether opening the innings or batting in the middle order, Gibbs played with an attacking instinct that often put the Proteas on top.
In Tests, he amassed 6167 runs at an average of nearly 42, while his 21 ODI centuries made him one of the most prolific limited-overs players his country has produced. In the field, he was a worthy successor to Jonty Rhodes at backward point.
Yet Gibbs’ career was not without turbulence. Controversies, disciplinary issues, and inconsistency occasionally put him in the headlines. Still, his career, stretching from the mid-1990s to 2010, was well recorded and left many inspired.

3. 175 runs vs Australia, 2006

Herschelle Gibbs produced one of the greatest ODI innings ever on March 12, 2006, at the Wanderers in Johannesburg, smashing 175 off just 111 balls against Australia. The knock came in an almost impossible chase of 435, after Australia had scored a world-record 434/4, thanks to Ricky Ponting’s 164.
Walking in at No. 3 after losing an early wicket, Gibbs brought up his century in 79 balls, hammering 21 fours and seven sixes. Alongside captain Graeme Smith, who scored 90, Gibbs stitched a 187-run partnership that brought the Proteas back in the game. Even after his dismissal, the momentum he created carried South Africa forward. In a dramatic final over, Mark Boucher sealed a one-wicket win with one ball to spare, as South Africa finished on 438/9, completing the highest successful chase in ODI history.
2. 72 runs vs Netherlands, 2007

Herschelle Gibbs smashed 72 off just 40 balls against the Netherlands at Warner Park, St Kitts, during the 2007 ICC ODI World Cup. Though the innings lasted barely 46 minutes, it became one of the most iconic in World Cup history.
After Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis gave a solid start, Gibbs continued the assault. In the 30th over, he hit six sixes in an over off Daan van Bunge, the first batter to achieve the feat in international cricket. His innings, featuring four boundaries and seven sixes, took South Africa past 350 in a rain-reduced 40-over game. South Africa finished on 353/3, with Kallis unbeaten on 128. The Dutch never looked the chase, folding for 132/9. Gibbs’ explosive knock guided the team to a huge 221-run victory.
1. 228 runs vs Pakistan, 2003

Gibbs produced one of the finest Test innings seen on South African soil, hammering 228 against Pakistan at Newlands in Cape Town in 2003. After captain Graeme Smith won the toss and chose to bat, the opening pair dismantled Pakistan’s attack with a record 368-run stand, then the highest opening partnership for South Africa.
Gibbs reached his double hundred off just 211 balls, smashing 29 fours and six sixes. Dropped twice, he made Pakistan pay heavily, dominating on a batting paradise as Smith’s superb 151 was overpowered by Gibbs’ brilliance. South Africa piled up 620/7 declared, before bowling Pakistan out for 252 and 226, winning by an innings and 142 runs. Gibbs’ 228 not only broke records but set up a crushing series-clinching victory.
