3. 123 vs England, 1999

Michael Slater produced one of the greatest Ashes innings of all time in the fifth Test between Australia and England at the Sydney Cricket Ground in January 1999. Australia were wobbling in their second innings as wickets fell regularly to Dean Headley and Peter Such, and the hosts desperately needed someone to counterattack. Slater smashed 123 off 189 balls, hitting 11 fours and three sixes.

He survived a tight run-out call that went to the third umpire at the score of 35. Notably. Slater scored 66.84% of Australia’s 184, the second-highest proportion in a completed Test innings. His brilliance set England a target of 287, and the hosts eventually sealed a 98-run victory.

2. 219 vs Sri Lanka, 1995

Michael Slater’s unbeaten 219 against Sri Lanka in the first Test at Perth remains his highest score. Opening the innings after Sri Lanka posted 251, he stitched a 228-run stand with Mark Taylor. Slater reached an unbeaten 189 at stumps on Day 2 and returned the next morning to complete his maiden double century in Test cricket. His 219 came off 321 balls, laced with 15 fours and five sixes. He handled Chaminda Vaas and Muttiah Muralitharan. Australia scored 617/5 declared and went on to win by an innings and 36 runs, with Slater named Player of the Match.

1. 169 vs Pakistan, 1999

In 1999, at the Gabba in Brisbane, Michael Slater smashed the best knock of his career, a 169 against Pakistan that played a crucial role in Australia’s win. Facing an attack featuring Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, and Mushtaq Ahmed, Slater scored runs with ease. Slater raced to his 13th Test hundred and carried on, finishing with 25 fours and a six.
