Tony Munyonga produced another moment of magic in the field as he pulled off a stunning running catch to dismiss the in-form Sri Lankan, Pathum Nissanka, during the Group B clash at the R. Premadasa Stadium.
Nissanka, who has been enjoying a purple patch in the tournament after his historic century against Australia, once again looked in sublime touch. He raced to 62 off 41 balls, hitting eight boundaries, and anchored Sri Lanka’s innings after their flying start. However, just when he was looking to attack the death overs, Zimbabwe bounced back through their veteran spinner Graeme Cremer.
Cremer tossed one up on a length outside off, and Nissanka committed for the reverse sweep but had to generate all the pace himself. The ball took the top edge and dipped towards the backward point. Munyonga sprinted back and completed a superb over-the-shoulder catch.
Earlier, Sri Lanka had stormed to 46 without loss in four overs, with Nissanka and Kusal Perera finding boundaries at will. After Perera fell for 22, the scoring rate dipped as the hosts went from 54 for 0 in 4.6 overs to only 69 runs for the loss of four wickets in the next 63 balls. Nissanka brought up another fifty off 35 balls but found little support as Zimbabwe kept chipping away with wickets. By the end of the 17th over, Sri Lanka were 142/4.
