T20 World Cup history: Top three wicket-takers for West Indies

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 is currently underway from February 7 to March 8, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. As the tournament gathers pace, West Indies will once again aim to revive their golden era in the shortest format. The Caribbean side boasts a rich legacy in T20 cricket, having lifted the coveted trophy twice – first in 2012 and again in 2016.

West Indies have been placed in Group C alongside England, Italy, Scotland, and Nepal. Their bowling attack will play a crucial role in determining their success in the tournament. The pace unit will be spearheaded by Shamar Joseph, whose raw speed and aggression bring an edge to the attack. Andre Russell is one of the most dynamic allrounders in modern T20 cricket. Hailing from Jamaica, Russell has built a reputation as a powerful hitter and a genuinely quick seam bowler capable of unsettling batters with pace and bounce. Just few years into his international career, Russell had already become a two-time T20 world champion.

Although much of his fame comes from franchise leagues around the globe, his contributions in World Cups have been significant. Russell’s ability to bowl at crucial stages and break partnerships has often been vital for West Indies. In T20 Internationals, he has taken 61 wickets in 86 matches. In T20 World Cup matches, he has claimed 29 wickets in 29 games, making him one of the leading wicket-takers for his country in the tournament’s history. 

Dwayne Bravo

Dwayne Bravo stands as one of the pioneers of T20 bowling excellence. He is known for his clever variations, slower balls, and control in the death overs, and was instrumental in West Indies’ title wins in 2012 and 2016. His knack for picking wickets at crucial moments made him a dependable performer on the biggest stage.

Bravo enjoyed tremendous success in franchise cricket as well, topping the wicket-taking charts in multiple IPL seasons and excelling in other leagues worldwide. In T20 Internationals, he claimed 78 wickets. Across all T20 cricket, he finished with an extraordinary 631 wickets in 582 matches. In the T20 World Cup, Bravo took 27 wickets in 34 matches. 

Samuel Badree

Samuel Badree was a specialist spinner who thrived on accuracy and control. Though listed as a leg-spinner, he relied more on precision than extravagant turns. West Indies often used him to open the bowling, a testament to the trust placed in his consistency.

Badree played a key role in West Indies’ 2016 T20 World Cup triumph and finished that tournament ranked as the No. 1 T20 bowler in the world. In 52 T20Is, he picked up 56 wickets. In T20 World Cup matches, he claimed 24 wickets in just 15 games.
