India are among the favourites to win the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. The Men in Blue began their campaign with a hard-fought victory over the United States of America, powered by a brilliant knock from captain Suryakumar Yadav and a disciplined collective effort from the bowling unit.

They are placed in Group A alongside USA, Pakistan, Namibia, and the Netherlands and enter the tournament as defending champions. They secured their second T20 World Cup title in 2024, defeating South Africa in the final held across the West Indies and the USA. With high expectations surrounding the team, India must carefully plan their approach for the remainder of the marquee event.

Should India follow the rotation policy for opening pairs in T20Is?

One of the major talking points has been India’s opening combination. The squad features Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, and Abhishek Sharma as opening options. In the lead-up to the tournament, India had relied on Shubman Gill during the Asia Cup 2025, but for the World Cup, the team management opted for a different combination. In the opening game, Ishan and Abhishek opened the innings, but both were dismissed cheaply, raising questions about stability at the top.

While Abhishek has largely been backed as one of the designated openers, the partner at the other end has frequently changed. This inconsistency has led to discussions about whether India should adopt a rotation policy for their opening pair in T20Is. A flexible approach could help distribute pressure more evenly and allow batters to adapt based on conditions and match situations.

There are concerns that have further intensified ahead of India’s clash against Namibia. Abhishek is currently recovering from stomach issues, while Ishan suffered an injury during a practice session after being struck by a delivery from Jasprit Bumrah. If both fail to recover in time, India may be forced to push a middle-order batter into the opening slot.

Considering these factors, adopting a rotation policy could prove beneficial. It would provide flexibility, allow adequate recovery time for players dealing with injuries and strengthen India’s bench depth. In a high-stakes tournament, adaptability at the top of the order could be crucial to sustaining momentum and maintaining balance within the side.
