India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir opened up about the emotional and professional demands of life on the road as the side prepares for a crucial group-stage fixture against Namibia in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The match holds added significance for Gambhir, who returns to his hometown, New Delhi, with the iconic Arun Jaitley Stadium set to host the contest on Thursday, February 12.
Speaking ahead of the game, Gambhir reflected on what “home” truly means while navigating a career defined by constant travel, pressure, and expectations. He highlighted how the rigours of international cricket often blur the line between personal and professional life, making the support system within the team environment indispensable.
“Home is love, home is where your family is, and obviously, home is where you get peace as well. For me, home has always been really special. Obviously, it’s tough because you go through a lot of lonely nights as well, you go through a lot of nights where things don’t go your way. It is sometimes a very challenging profession as well, so when you have got your trusted support staff, they become as close as your family, because you can share a lot of emotions with them,” Gambhir said in a video released by BCCI.
Gambhir’s bond with Delhi runs deep. He represented the state extensively in domestic cricket, captained Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) in the IPL, and also registered his highest Test score (206) at the same venue. Since taking over the reins as India’s head coach in 2024, following Rahul Dravid’s tenure, Gambhir has placed strong emphasis on building trust and familiarity within the support staff.
“In fact, when you are in this profession, you share a lot more emotion with them as compared to what you share with your family. They know the ups and downs of this profession, they know how it feels when things don’t go your way,” he added.
There has to be a funny moment in practice sessions or the dressing room: Gambhir
The former India opener has largely handpicked his backroom team, working closely with assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate and bowling coach Morne Morkel, both of whom he has previously collaborated with during his IPL stints. That continuity, Gambhir believes, plays a key role in creating a secure and understanding team environment.
Beyond tactics and preparation, Gambhir also stressed the importance of maintaining a relaxed atmosphere within the squad, especially during a high-pressure tournament like the T20 World Cup. With expectations sky-high on home soil, he feels moments of levity are essential to keep players mentally fresh.
“There have to be moments where the guys can be themselves, there has to be funny moments somewhere in the practice sessions or in the dressing room. Everyone has a funny side, so we make sure that we try to get the fun side out of everyone, and that is something that will keep the atmosphere light as well,” Gambhir said.
India head into the Namibia clash with a chance to reclaim the top spot in Group A, ahead of a high-stakes encounter against arch-rivals Pakistan. For Gambhir, the balance between intensity and ease could prove just as vital as form and strategy as the tournament progresses.
