India’s team combination at the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 has already caught attention after Sanju Samson was left out of the playing XI for the opening Group A match against the United States. With India set to face Namibia next, the question once again resurfaces, whether Samson should be reinstated as an opener, or has Ishan Kishan sealed that spot? The decision is crucial, especially with India looking to fine-tune their XI ahead of tougher fixtures in the group.
Samson was originally backed as India’s first-choice opener when the T20 World Cup squad was announced in December. He opened the batting in the five-match home T20I series against New Zealand, a phase seen as a preparatory run for the tournament. However, the series turned into a setback for Samson, who managed only 46 runs in five innings, including a golden duck. Matters worsened when he did not get a chance to bat in India’s only warm-up match before the World Cup.
In contrast, Ishan Kishan made the most of his opportunities. Batting at No. 3 against New Zealand, Kishan scored over 200 runs, including a half-century and a century, finishing as the second-highest run-getter of the series. His momentum carried into the warm-up game against South Africa, where he opened the innings and smashed 53 off just 20 balls.
India captain Suryakumar Yadav confirmed at the toss against the USA that Samson had been left out, with Kishan opening alongside Abhishek Sharma. The management’s call reflected form over reputation. Kishan not only provided explosive starts but also a reliable keeper.

Notably, India’s top order has thrived on early aggression lately. With players like Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan, India can put pressure on opposition bowlers from the start. Samson, despite his talent, struggled to find rhythm in the lead-up to the World Cup. His inability to convert starts, or even survive the powerplay, worked against him.
Facing Namibia is a slightly different scenario, and India may consider rotating players to manage workloads and test bench strength. This opens a small window for Samson. If India chooses to rest Kishan or experiment, Samson could be given one final opportunity to justify the faith shown in him earlier.
That said, the team management has clearly leaned towards form, clarity of role, and momentum. Kishan’s performances have earned him trust, and dropping him after strong knocks could disrupt continuity. Moreover, Tilak Varma’s inclusion in the middle order has already altered the batting structure, leaving limited room for changes.
Another factor working against Samson is confidence. Being dropped for the tournament opener sends a strong message. In major tournaments, India has often preferred players who are already in rhythm rather than those searching for form.
