Seam bowler Fergus O’Neill has signed a two-year contract with Sydney Sixers, adding another chapter to an off-season that could also see him change state allegiances. The 25-year-old joins the Sixers after coming off contract with the Melbourne Renegades at the end of the most recent Big Bash League season.
O’Neill’s time with the Renegades was limited, featuring in just two matches during the latest campaign, and he has now been snapped up by the Sixers during the BBL trade window. While his T20 résumé remains modest just 12 matches across his career, O’Neill has built a far stronger reputation in red-ball cricket, where his consistency and control have stood out.
“The Sixers have set the standard in the BBL for a long time, so to be joining a club with that culture and history is really exciting. I’m looking forward to working with the coaches and playing alongside a strong bowling group, and hopefully contributing to more success for the team,” O’Neill said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo
Sydney Sixers general manager Rachael Haynes believes the move will pay dividends despite O’Neill’s limited exposure to the shortest format.
“Fergus is a proven performer in domestic cricket, and someone we believe has the tools to be highly effective in the T20 format for our club. He’s relentless with the ball, brings great professionalism, and will add real strength and depth to our bowling group over the next few seasons,” Haynes said.
The Sixers, who finished runners-up in the most recent BBL season, are set for a period of transition off the field as well. The franchise will begin the search for a new head coach following the departure of Greg Shipperd.
Away from the BBL, speculation continues to swirl around O’Neill’s state future. Victoria coach Chris Rogers recently addressed reports suggesting New South Wales could attempt to lure the seamer north, while making it clear the state remains keen to retain him. O’Neill has developed an impressive red-ball record for Victoria, placing him firmly in conversations around future Test selection.
“Like all players, he wants to feel valued, and I think all parties are working through this to make sure he’s playing where he belongs and everyone’s happy. These are things that happen in a player’s career, but I know he knows how much we support him and believe in him, and hopefully that will all get put to bed soon,” Rogers said earlier this week.
O’Neill’s immediate focus will turn overseas, with the fast bowler set to return to Nottinghamshire in April after signing a two-year deal to feature in the County Championship.
