India are set to begin their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign against the United States of America on February 7, 2026, at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The 20-team tournament will run from February 7 to March 8 and will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

The Men in Blue have been placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, Namibia, USA, and the Netherlands. India enter the tournament as the defending champions, having lifted the T20 World Cup in 2024 after defeating South Africa in the final held across the Caribbean and the USA. They will be eager to add a third T20 World Cup title, especially while playing in front of their home crowd.

With Suryakumar Yadav leading India in a World Cup for the first time, the hosts will hope to start their campaign on a positive note at a venue that has produced mixed results in T20 internationals. Overall, India have played six T20Is at the Wankhede Stadium, winning four and losing two.

India’s most recent T20I at the venue came against England in 2025, where they registered a commanding 150-run victory, powered by Abhishek Sharma’s sensational 135 off 54 balls. In 2023, India edged past Sri Lanka by two runs, with Shivam Mavi claiming a four-wicket haul to seal the win.

Earlier, India defeated West Indies by 67 runs in 2019, with Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul all scoring half-centuries. In 2017, they also beat Sri Lanka by five wickets. However, India’s first T20I at the Wankhede ended in a six-wicket loss to England, while their other defeat came in the 2016 T20 World Cup semi-final against West Indies, where they lost by seven wickets.

Putting past disappointments behind them, India will be keen to avoid a repeat of 2016 and make a strong start to their 2026 World Cup campaign at the Wankhede.
