T20 World Cup 2026: 3 South African batters to watch out for

The marquee T20 World Cup 2026 is just around the corner, with all 20 teams currently in the process of finalising their squads. Much of the attention is on the South African side, who finished as runners-up in the 2024 edition and will be eager to go one step further this time. South Africa boast a well-balanced squad featuring quality batters, reliable all-rounders, and a potent bowling attack.

However, the spotlight will particularly be on their batting unit, especially with several key players returning from injury and looking to regain peak form ahead of the tournament. Here are three South African batters to watch out for in the T20 World Cup 2026.

Dewald Brevis

Dewald Brevis

Dewald Brevis is one of the most exciting young batting talents in world cricket. He is known for his ability to hit the ball to all parts of the ground, and primarily operates in the middle order and brings instant momentum to the innings. He made his T20I debut in 2023 against Australia but initially struggled to find consistency at the international level.

However, the 22-year-old has gained valuable experience across global T20 leagues and enters the World Cup on the back of a successful SA20 season. His confidence and power-hitting ability make him a dangerous proposition for bowlers. In 19 T20Is, Brevis has scored 469 runs, including one century and one half-century, at an impressive strike rate of 173.70.

Quinton de Kock

Wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock remains one of South Africa’s most reliable and explosive performers in white-ball cricket. A natural stroke-maker, de Kock combines aggressive batting with sharp glovework behind the stumps, adding immense value to the side. He established himself early across all three formats and found his rhythm in T20 cricket during the 2016 T20 World Cup.

With vast experience in Indian conditions through the IPL, de Kock is expected to be a key pillar of South Africa’s batting lineup. In 100 T20Is, he has scored 2771 runs, including one century and 18 half-centuries.

Aiden Markram

South Africa captain Aiden Markram is known for his composure, class, and ability to perform against top-quality opposition. He is strong on the off side, technically sound, and has consistently delivered in high-pressure situations. He enjoyed a stellar T20 World Cup campaign in 2021 and was named Cricket South Africa’s T20I Player of the Year.

In 2024, Markram led South Africa to the final, narrowly missing out on the title. In 66 T20Is, he has scored 1577 runs, including 10 half-centuries, and will once again be central to South Africa’s title aspirations.
