Shakib Al Hasan’s Bangladesh return rests with selectors, says BCB Director

Shakib Al Hasan’s Bangladesh return rests with selectors, says BCB Director

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was last seen in international cricket in October 2024, when he represented his country in the Test series against India in Kanpur. Since then, political turmoil has cast doubt over his prospects of returning to the national side.

In a recent development, the possibility of Shakib’s comeback has taken a new turn after Bangladesh Cricket Board director Amzad Hossain shared his views on the veteran’s future. Shakib had earlier expressed his desire to play a farewell series on home soil, but whether that wish will materialise remains uncertain, with Amzad drawing a clear distinction between individual stature and team selection.

Amzad spoke about Shakib’s physical fitness, stating that the experienced all-rounder is fit enough to continue playing for several more years. However, he stressed that Shakib’s return does not depend solely on his fitness or past achievements. The decision ultimately rests with the national selection committee, which has the authority to determine his inclusion in the squad.

“Considering Shakib Al Hasan’s fitness and current form, I believe he is capable of continuing at the top level for several more years. Whether he plays for Bangladesh or not is entirely a matter for the selectors. The committee will pick whoever they deem necessary for the team’s needs at any given time,” Hossain said.

Amzad further explained that the BCB would select only those players they consider necessary for the team at any given time. He added that Shakib is currently unavailable for selection as he is not in the country. However, once he makes himself available, he could be given a fair opportunity to make a return to the national side.

“In the current situation, he isn’t available for selection as he is out of the country. But in the future, if he returns and maintains his fitness and form… we would all likely be interested in seeing him play again. Cricket is a game for everyone, regardless of party or opinion,” said Hossain.

Since the collapse of the Awami League government, Shakib has not returned to Bangladesh, having also served as a member of parliament. He is currently playing in overseas franchise leagues, and his availability for the national side remains uncertain.
