IPL 2026 Auction: 3 most expensive buys

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 mini-auction concluded on Tuesday, December 16, in Abu Dhabi and witnessed several high-profile signings, with franchises splurging big money on proven international stars and emerging Indian talent. While a number of players went under the hammer, a select few dominated the headlines due to the massive sums they attracted. Here let us take a look at the three most expensive buys from the IPL 2026 mini-auction.

Australian all-rounder Cameron Green emerged as the costliest purchase of the auction after being snapped up by three-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for a staggering ₹25.20 crore. The bidding was initiated by Mumbai Indians (MI), and after an intense contest involving multiple franchises and as many as 57 bids, KKR eventually sealed the deal.

During his debut IPL season with MI, he impressed by scoring over 400 runs, showcasing his power-hitting ability and composure under pressure. Known for his versatility, Green also offers valuable seam-bowling options, which adds depth to KKR’s lineup.

Matheesha Pathirana

The second-most expensive buy was Sri Lankan fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana, who was acquired by KKR for ₹18 crore after being released by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of the auction. His price reflected a significant jump, underlining the high demand for quality death-over specialists.

Pathirana spent four seasons with CSK and claimed over 40 wickets during his stint, becoming a vital part of their bowling attack. Renowned for his slingy action and pinpoint yorkers, the young pacer is expected to thrive in a new environment.

Prashant Veer

The third spot was taken by uncapped Indian all-rounder Prashant Veer, who was signed by Chennai Super Kings for ₹14.20 crore, making him one of the most expensive uncapped players in IPL auction history. CSK had to overcome early competition from Rajasthan Royals (RR) and a late bidding surge from Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to secure his services.

A left-arm spinner who bats in the middle order, Veer has played 12 T20 matches, and scored 112 runs at a strike rate of 167.16 in addition to taking 12 wickets in nine innings at an impressive economy rate of 6.45. He rose to prominence in the Uttar Pradesh T20 League while representing Noida Super Kings.
