OTD: Yuvraj Singh was born in 1981

Yuvraj Singh, one of the finest all-rounders to have represented India, was born on December 12, 1981. He celebrates his 44th birthday on Friday.

The Chandigarh-born is the son of former India fast bowler Yograj Singh. His father trained him from a young age, hoping to help him have a long playing career for the national team. While Yograj played one Test and six ODIs, his son finished with 40 Tests, 304 ODIs, and 58 T20Is to his name.

Yuvraj debuted against Kenya in an ODI encounter at the Gymkhana Club Ground on March 10, 2000. Three years later, he played his first Test match, which was against New Zealand in Punjab.

Yuvraj received a lot of backing from his first captain during his stint in international cricket – Sourav Ganguly. The Prince of Bengal allowed Yuvraj the freedom to flourish.

Yuvraj played key roles for India during their triumphant campaigns in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup. His six sixes in Stuart Broad’s over in Durban in an important clash between India and England remains etched in the cricket folkore. The iconic cricketer won the Player of the Tournament award during the ODI World Cup in 2011.

Yuvraj was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, mediastinal seminoma, in 2011, shortly after the World Cup triumph. He successfully battled the disease and was declared cancer-free in March 2012.

Yuvraj made a comeback to international cricket during a clash against New Zealand in September 2012. After his return from the dreaded disease, Yuvraj had been in and out of the national team. However, during the time, he also won the IPL twice and registered his highest ODI score.

Yuvraj retired from international cricket on June 10, 2019. Since then, he has played in Legends League tournaments and also groomed youngsters like Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma, among others.
