Mitchell Marsh announces retirement from Sheffield Shield, but open for Test comeback

Star Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh has confirmed that he will retire from Sheffield Shield after the current season, drawing curtains on his domestic red-ball career. Marsh, however, has kept himself open to play for the country in Tests, if the need be. It has been around a year already since the cricketer last played a Test, coming against India in a Boxing Day encounter at the MCG.

Marsh has stated that he feels honoured to have been a part of Western Australia’s journey, having made his debut at a tender age of 18 in 2009. He will now keep his focus on playing in the Big Bash League (BBL) for the Perth Scorchers, and captaining Australia in One-Day Internationals and T20Is.

“It has been an honour to play Sheffield Shield cricket for Western Australia. Right now, I am deeply committed to the group and the Perth Scorchers. Playing for WA has been a huge part of my life and I plan to give back in any way possible long into the future,” Marsh said in a statement as quoted by WACA.

Expressing his thoughts on Marsh’s departure, WA head coach Adam Voges iterated that the former gave it his all for the side. Voges, who has also shared the field with Marsh, has opined that it was always delightful to watch him play. He further wished the experienced all-rounder good luck as he continues to be an active figure in international and T20 league cricket.

“Mitch embodies everything about what it means to be a Sheffield Shield player for Western Australia. From playing alongside him to coaching him in more recent times, he’s given his all for his state. It’s been a privilege to watch him progress from Sheffield Shield to being a successful international cricketer for Australia. He’s an outstanding character on and off the field and it’s been a pleasure to play a part in his journey,” Voges stated.

Notably, Marsh will bid adieu to Western Australia after a storied career of 55 Shield appearances for the side, laced with 2744 runs and 82 wickets. He is one of the few players from Western Australia to have a familial connection with the side.
