OTD: A Delhi thriller ended with Pakistan four wickets and India 26 runs short of victory in 1979

India and Pakistan clashed in the second Test of the six-match series, with Asif Iqbal captaining Pakistan and Sunil Gavaskar leading the Indian team. The match was played at the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi from December 4 to 9 in 1979.

Asif Iqbal won the toss and chose to bat first in the match that ended up being a thriller to the end. Wasim Raja made a sublime 97 with 15 fours, and Iqbal made 64 runs with six fours and one six. Javed Miandad got 34 while Imran Khan made 30 as Pakistan reached 273 runs. Kapil Dev took 5/58, while Karsan Ghavri and Roger Binny took two wickets each.

Pakistan bowlers shone as India was skittled for 126 runs, with Sunil Gavaskar making 31 and Yashpal Sharma making 28. Sikandar Bakht rattled the Indian team with 8/69.

Pakistan, in their second innings, were determined to set a huge target for the Indian team. Wasim Raja made 61 with eight fours, while Majid Khan had given a good start with 40 runs. Zaheer Abbas reeled off a classy 50, while Asif Iqbal made 38 runs to bolster the Pakistani total to 242 runs.

Kapil Dev added four more wickets to his first innings haul of five scalps, while Roger Binny and Dilip Doshi took two wickets each. India were set 390 runs to chase by Pakistan and win the Test.

Sunil Gavaskar (21) and Chetan Chauhan (40) did well to give a strong start. But it was Dilip Vengsarkar who anchored the chase with his unbeaten 146 with 11 fours and one six. He received great support from Yashpal Sharma (60), G. Viswanath (34), and Kapil Dev (21).

Sikandar Bakht took three wickets, as India ended the final day on 364/6, just 26 runs short of the win, while Pakistan had only four wickets to take to pocket the match.
