Australian Test captain Pat Cummins has said that he will most likely make a comeback and feature in the third Ashes Test. Cummins has missed the first two Tests after failing to recover from a back injury. Cummins said that he feels in great physical state and has been operating at full throttle in the practice sessions.
However, he explained that the main issue following his kind of bone injury is the lack of successive bowling days. Cummins admitted that he has not bowled on back-to-back days for quite some time now, something that is essential in preparing for Test cricket.
“First of all, yeah, I should be right for Adelaide. I’ll have one more bowl tomorrow [Sunday], and then we’ll go to Adelaide and have another bowl there. barring any hiccups, I’ll be good to go. Body feels great. Relatively close, really. My body feels great, I’m bowling at 100%,” stated Cummins during a conversation with Fox Sports.
“The big question mark when coming back from a bone injury is we tend to have a bowl and have a couple of days off, recover, bowl, bowl. I haven’t done back-to-back bowls, so one of the high-risk things going into a Test match is that you’re going to be expected to bowl two days in a row, maybe three days in a row, and potentially quite a few overs,” he added.
Cummins, who last represented Australia in July earlier in the year, will aim to return to competitive cricket after a prolonged hiatus. He was speculated to play the ongoing pink-ball Test, however, he was unable to gain match-level fitness and had to sit out.
Coming to the current series, the hosts lead by 1-0 margin. They won the series-opening clash by eight wickets in Perth and hold the upper hand by stumps on the third day in Brisbane, leading by 43 runs after taking six of England’s second innings wickets.
