OTD: Abdul Razzaq was born in 1979

Abdul Razzaq, the ace Pakistan all-rounder, was born on this day, December 2, in 1979. He was from Shahdara Bagh, a suburb on the outskirts of Lahore, Punjab. Abdul Razzaq was inspired by Wasim Akram to take up fast bowling and came to the limelight on Pakistan’s U19 tour to the West Indies, taking 17 wickets and making runs as well.

Razzaq was fast-tracked into the Pakistan team in 1996, making his ODI debut against Zimbabwe. He made his Test debut in 1999 against Australia. He soon became a permanent fixture in the Pakistani lineup, even batting at no. 3 regularly in ODI cricket. He was part of the Pakistani team that played in the final of the ICC World Cup 1999.

Abdul Razzaq was also part of the Pakistan squad that won the 2009 T20 World Cup and was part of the team that played in the 2007 and 2011 ICC World Cups.

Overall, Abdul Razzaq made 1946 runs at an average of 28.61 and took 100 wickets in 46 Tests, including three centuries and seven fifties, including the best score of 134. His best bowling figures in Tests were 5/35. He took one Test hat-trick at the age of 20 against Sri Lanka.

In ODIs, Razzaq made 5080 runs at an average of 29.70, including three centuries and 23 fifties, with the best score of 112 runs. He also took 269 wickets at an economy of 4.69 and best bowling figures of 6/35.

Razzaq also made 393 runs at a strike rate of 116.61 and took 20 wickets at an economy of 6.99 in 32 T20Is.

After retirement from international cricket, Abdul Razzaq became the interim head coach of the Pakistan team in 2021 and assistant coach of the team in 2024.

Abdul Razzaq’s legacy in the game is distinguished by his all-round talent and ability to perform under duress. He is a recognized figure in Pakistani cricket and serves as an inspiration for many young cricketers.
