Australian pacer Peter Siddle was born on November 25, 1984. His career began in rural Victoria, and he entered Australia’s 200-Test-wicket club by the time he hung his boots. Siddle’s first breakthrough performance came in the 2007-08 Sheffield Shield final, where he bagged seven wickets on a flat SCG pitch. He soon became a crucial member of Australia’s pace attack during a transitional era.
Siddle made his Test debut in 2008 at Mohali, and one of the most memorable moments from that game was of hitting Gautam Gambhir on the helmet with his first delivery and dismissing Sachin Tendulkar as his maiden Test wicket. He went on to pick 221 wickets in 67 Tests at 30.66, including eight five-wicket hauls.
One of his best moments came on his 26th birthday during the 2010-11 Ashes in Brisbane, where he clinched a Test hat-trick, finishing with 6/54. The feat became an iconic Ashes moment. Siddle’s best phase came between 2011 and 2014, leading Australia’s pace unit. He played a crucial role in the 2011-12 4-0 demolition of India, taking 23 wickets, and was also instrumental in the 5-0 Ashes whitewash in 2013-14, forming a perfect partnership alongside Mitchell Johnson and Ryan Harris.
Despite a strong record, declining pace saw him lose his spot in 2014, and he played only sporadically afterward. However, a strong BBL stint and County success with Essex led to a surprise recall in 2018. He contributed in the UAE and was picked for the 2019 Ashes, after which he retired from international cricket.
In ODIs, Siddle finished with 17 wickets from 20 matches, while T20 success came later in his career, especially with the Adelaide Strikers at BBL, where he took 111 wickets.
Domestically, Siddle enjoyed a prolific first-class career, finishing with 792 wickets in 231 matches at 26.20, including 30 five-wicket hauls. He continued playing elite cricket into his late 30s, representing Tasmania and later returning to Victoria and the Melbourne Renegades in 2023-24.
