OTD: Rohit Sharma shattered the world record for the highest individual score in ODIs in 2014

OTD: Rohit Sharma shattered the world record for the highest individual score in ODIs in 2014

On this day, 11 years ago, Indian batting stalwart Rohit Sharma created history at the iconic Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Facing Sri Lanka in the 4th ODI, the Indian opener played an innings that is still celebrated as one of the most extraordinary performances in limited-overs cricket. Rohit hammered 264 off 173 balls, becoming the highest individual score in ODIS.

Before that match, Rohit was returning from a 10-week injury layoff, having fractured a finger. India elected to bat first, and after early wickets, Rohit took his time to settle before placing his name in the record books. This innings surpassed Virender Sehwag’s previous record of 219 and Rohit’s previous best of 209.

The right-handed batter was earlier dropped on 4 by Thisara Perera. From there, Rohit reached his century off 100 balls. His next 164 runs came in just 73 balls as he smashed 33 boundaries and nine sixes.

Once he crossed 150, he brought up his double century in 151 balls, and in the final overs, he shifted his gears. Even after being dropped again in 201, Rohit made full use of his reprieve.

When he was finally dismissed on the last ball of the innings, India had scored 404/5 with Rohit’s 264 accounting for over 65% of India’s total runs. Notably, in that game, the next-best Indian scorer was Virat Kohli with 66 runs.

Sri Lanka’s chase never got going as Umesh Yadav and Dhawal Kulkarni led India’s bowling attack to bowl them out for 251, sealing a 153-run victory.

This was his second double century in ODIs. Later in 2017, he registered his third double ton, making him the only player to have scored three of them. Rohit is currently the third-highest run-getter for India in the 50-over format, with 11370 runs in 276 matches.
