OTD: New Zealand clinched their first-ever series victory in 1969

It was on this day, November 11, in 1969, when New Zealand clinched their maiden Test series win. This came after they drew the third test of the three-match series in Pakistan, pocketing the series 1-0.

The first Test of the series was played in Karachi, which saw Pakistan win the toss and pose 220 in the first innings, with Sadiq Mohammad scoring 69 and Hedley Howarth taking a five-wicket haul. New Zealand replied with 274, with fifties by Bruce Murray and Dayle Hadlee, while Mohammad Nazir took 7/99. Pakistan replied with 283/8d, as Younis Ahmed made 62. Set 230 runs to win, New Zealand managed to hang on for a draw, scoring 112/5.

The second Test of the series was played in Lahore, and once again Pakistan batted after winning the toss and were bowled out for 114 as Hedley Howarth and Vic Pollard took three wickets each. New Zealand replied with 241 runs as Bruce Murray made 90 and Brian Hastings scored 80, while Pervez Sajjad took 7/74. 

Pakistan did better in the second go, scoring 208, with Shafqat Rana scoring 95. Set 82 runs to win the game, New Zealand achieved the target with five wickets in hand and went 1-0 up in the series.

The third Test of the series was played in Dhaka from November 8 to 11 and saw New Zealand scoring 273, with Glenn Turner making 110 and Mark Burgess amassing 59, while Intikhab Alam took a fifer. Pakistan replied with 290/7, with Asif Iqbal top scoring with 92. 

New Zealand made 200 in the second innings, with Mark Burgess scoring 119*, while Intikhab Alam took another fifer in the Test. Set 184 to win, Pakistan managed 51/4 on the final day.

This win gave New Zealand their maiden Test series win, as they pocketed the three-Test series 1-0.
