OTD The first of Australia's multiple World Cup titles in 1987

Australia, one of the fiercest and most competitive teams in cricket history, won the 50-over World Cup for the first time on this day in 1987, November 8, in Kolkata. The Australian cricket team is among the most successful teams in the competition’s history, having won six ODI World Cups.

In 1987, Australia won the World Cup for the first time after defeating England in the final in Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, under the captaincy of Allan Border.

Australia had defeated Pakistan in Lahore, and England had defeated India in Mumbai to qualify for the Reliance World Cup final, which was played at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Australia captain Allan Border won the toss and chose to bat first.

David Boon and Geoff Marsh (24) added 75 runs for the first wicket, while Boon and Dean Jones added 76 runs for the second wicket. Jones made 33 before falling to Eddie Hemmings, while Boon made 75 before his dismissal. Border made 31 in 31 balls, while Mike Veletta got a quick 45* in 31 balls to power Australia to 253/5 in 50 overs. For England, Hemmings picked two wickets.

In response, Australia bowled tight lines, and Craig McDermott got opener Tim Robinson for a golden duck. Graham Gooch made 35 and Bill Athey amassed 58 to keep England in the hunt. Captain Mike Gatting scored 45 runs and fell to the infamous sweep shot when England were in touching distance.

Allan Lamb tried his best, scoring 45 runs, before getting out to Steve Waugh as England folded for 246/8 in 50 overs. Australia won the final by seven runs as Steve Waugh and Allan Border took two wickets each.

Boon got the Player of the Match award, and Australia won their first World Cup title when the tournament was held for the first time outside the UK.
