Brett Lee, considered to be one of the fastest bowlers ever to play the game, was born on this day, November 8, in 1976, in Wollongong, New South Wales. He played U19 cricket when, in 1994, a stress fracture to his back led him to remodel his bowling action.
Lee made his domestic debut in the 1996-97 season for New South Wales, and his Test debut came in 1999 against India. He made his ODI debut in 2000 against Pakistan, and his T20I debut came in 2005 against New Zealand.
Brett Lee and Shoaib Akhtar competed for the title of the fastest bowler in the world, with Akhtar breaking the 100-mph barrier first and Lee following shortly after. Lee was part of Australia’s 2003 ICC World Cup winning squad, and he also won the Champions Trophy in 2006 and 2009, respectively.
Lee took 310 wickets at an average of 30.81 in 76 Tests, with 10 five-wicket hauls and best bowling of 5/30. In ODIs, he took 380 wickets at an economy of 4.76 in 221 games, including nine fifers and best bowling figures of 5/22. In his short T20I career, Lee took 28 wickets at an economy of 7.86 in 25 games. He was also a handy batter with 1451 Test runs and 1176 ODI runs to his name and a total of eight fifties across formats.
Apart from international cricket, Lee was a marquee player in T20 leagues as well, featuring for Kings XI Punjab, Kolkata Knight Riders, New South Wales, Sydney Sixers, and more. He announced his retirement from international cricket in 2012 with 718 wickets in all three formats combined.
Lee also played for Australia alongside his elder brother Shane Lee, who featured in 45 ODIs for the Kangaroos from 1995 to 2001 and won the 1999 World Cup.
