OTD Glenn Maxwell played the greatest ODI knock of all times against Afghanistan in 2023 World Cup

OTD Glenn Maxwell played the greatest ODI knock of all times against Afghanistan in 2023 World Cup

Glenn Maxwell delivered what is arguably the best knock in ICC ODI World Cup history, at the Wankhede Stadium on this day, November 7, 2023. He overcame all forms of hardships to give Australia an unforgettable victory.

Australia faced Afghanistan in the 39th game of the ICC World Cup 2023 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Afghanistan needed to do a miracle of beating Australia to boost their chances of qualifying for the semi-finals of the tournament.

Hashmatullah Shahidi, the Afghanistan captain, won the toss and chose to bat first. Opener Ibrahim Zadran slammed a fabulous 129* in 143 balls with eight fours and two sixes to anchor the Afghan innings. Rashid Khan (35*), Rahmat Shah (30), and captain Shahidi (26) powered Afghanistan to 291/5 in 50 overs.

Azmatullah Omarzai and Naveen Ul Haq gave a dream start with the ball to Afghanistan as the dangerous Travis Head was dismissed for 0, while David Warner made 18, Marnus Labuschagne got 14, and Mitchell Marsh scored 24. Rashid Khan hurt Australia even more by picking the wickets of Marcus Stoinis (6) and Mitchell Starc (3), leaving Australia at 91/7 in the 19th over.

Glenn Maxwell was joined by Captain Pat Cummins at that stage, and Australia threw caution to the wind. Maxwell began hammering the Afghanistan bowlers after steadying the ship with Cummins, who held onto one end of the wicket.

Cummins remained not out on 12 in 68 balls, hitting one four and only fed strike to Maxwell, while shielding him initially.

Maxwell batted on one leg as he suffered severe cramps in both hands and legs as Mumbai heat took a lot out of him. He added 202 unbeaten runs for the eighth wicket with Pat Cummins and towards the end of the knock, was batting on one leg, flicking Afghan spinners for sixes for fun.

He made 201* in 128 balls with 21 fours and 10 sixes as Australia won the game by three wickets in the end. Maxwell’s knock is widely considered to be the greatest ODI knock ever, as it remains the only ODI double ton scored by a non-opener and is the highest score by a batter in a chase.
