OTD: Pakistan recorded historic 10-wicket win over India in T20 World Cup 2021

OTD: Pakistan recorded historic 10-wicket win over India in T20 World Cup 2021

It was on this day, October 24, when Pakistan registered their only win in an ICC World Cup event over India, in the 2021 T20 World Cup game. The match was played in Dubai and was the first time since the 2019 World Cup that the two teams were clashing.

Matches in Dubai International Cricket Stadium traditionally favour the team that chases, owing to the dew factor. And in this match, Babar Azam, the Pakistan captain, won the toss and asked Virat Kohli and the Indian team to bat first.

Much was expected of the famed Indian top order of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, and Suryakumar Yadav. However, Pakistan’s premier fast bowler Shaheen Afridi had other ideas and rattled the Indian top order by dismissing Rohit for a first-ball duck and Rahul for three runs.

Suryakumar fell for 11 runs to Hasan Ali. Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant got together to mend the Indian innings, adding 53 runs for the fourth wicket before Kohli fell for 57 in 49 balls with five fours and one six to Shaheen Afridi, while Pant made 39 runs, falling to Shadab Khan.

India could only manage 151/7 in 20 overs, with Shaheen Afridi starring with 3/31 for Pakistan.

Many expected the Indian bowlers to have the same effect as the Pakistani bowlers, but it proved to be a bloodbath as Babar and Mohammad Rizwan barely broke a sweat as they chased down the Indian total in 17.5 overs.

Rizwan made 79* in 55 balls with six fours and three sixes, while Babar made 68* in 52 balls with six fours and two sixes as Pakistan won the game by 10 wickets.

This was the first time Pakistan had defeated India in an ICC World Cup game, ODIs, or T20Is. This remains Pakistan’s only win over India in the T20 World Cup, while they are yet to defeat India in ICC ODI World Cups.
