OTD: Sadiq, Mushtaq Mohammad became only 2nd pair of brothers to score hundreds in same Test innings

It was on this day, October 24, in 1976, that Mushtaq Mohammad and Sadiq Mohammad became only the second pair of brothers to score hundreds in the same Test innings. They achieved the record after Ian Chappell and Greg Chappell for Australia against England in 1972.

The occasion was the second Test between Pakistan and New Zealand, which began at the Niaz Stadium in Hyderabad, Sind, on October 23. Pakistan captain Mushtaq Mohammad won the toss and chose to bat first.

Sadiq Mohammad and Majid Khan opened the batting for Pakistan. Sadiq Mohammad had to retire hurt on 56 due to cramps after adding 136 runs with Majid, who made 98. Sadiq later returned to join Mushtaq in the middle to resume his innings.

The Mohammad brothers hammered New Zealand bowlers as Sadiq made 103* and Mushtaq was run out for 101 runs, as Pakistan made 473/8d.

In response, New Zealand were undone for 219 runs, with Sarfraz Nawaz and Imran Khan taking three wickets each. New Zealand were asked to follow on and scored 254 runs in the second innings. John Parker top-scored with 82, as Intikhab Alam took 4/44 and Javed Miandad, playing his second Test, took 3/74 and five wickets in the match. Pakistan won the game by 10 wickets, chasing down 4 runs to win the Test.

Sadiq and Mushtaq Mohammad remain the only Pakistani brother pair to achieve the feat of scoring hundreds in the same innings of the Test match. Ian and Greg Chappell achieved the feat thrice in their careers.

Zimbabwe’s Andy and Grant Flower did the same against Pakistan in the Harare Test in 1995. Steve Waugh and Mark Waugh became the first pair of twin brothers to achieve this feat and did it twice – once against the West Indies in the Jamaica Test in 1995 and then against England at the Oval in 2001.

The last pair to score hundreds in the same innings of the Test was Shaun and Mitchell Marsh of Australia, who achieved this feat in the Sydney Test of 2018 against England.
