OTD: Virender Sehwag was born in 1978

Virender Sehwag, the dashing India opener, was born on this day, October 20, in 1978. Sehwag made his name for being a swashbuckling batter and reimagining opening the batting in Test cricket.

Sehwag remains the first Indian to score a triple hundred in Test cricket and one of the only four batters to score more than one triple century in the format. He was also the first captain to score a double century in ODIs, a feat he achieved in 2011 against the West Indies. He still holds the record for the highest individual score by a captain in ODIs.

Sehwag played a big part for India in their victorious 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup campaigns.

Sehwag made 8586 runs at an average of 49.34 in 104 Tests, including 23 centuries and 32 fifties, with the highest score of 319. He also took 40 wickets with the best bowling figures of 5/104 in Test matches.

Sehwag was also prolific in ODIs as well, scoring 8273 runs at an average of 35.05 and strike rate of 104.33 in 251 matches, including 15 centuries and 38 fifties, including the best score of 219. He also took 96 wickets at an economy of 3.04 with best bowling figures of 4/6. He also made 394 runs with a strike rate of 145.38 with two fifties in theT20I format.

Sehwag was also a force in the Indian Premier League, as he He made 2728 runs at a strike rate of 155.44 in 104 IPL games, including two centuries and 16 fifties, with the best score of 122. He captained Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings (formerly Kings XI Punjab) in the IPL and was the head coach of PBKS after his retirement.

After calling time on his India career in 2015, Sehwag has turned commentator and media personality. In 2011, Sehwag started the Sehwag International School in Haryana, where students can study, stay, train, and play sports.

Sehwag received the Arjuna Award in 2002 and won the Wisden Leading Cricketer of the Year in 2008 and 2009. He was the ICC Test cricketer of the year in 2010 and was given the Padma Shri in 2010.
